Mt. Victoria with Pat & Suzie

Climbing in a snowstorm on Mt. Victoria!

Had a great trip last week up to Abbot Pass with Pat & Suzie from Calgary. On the first day we took the bus into Lake O Hara then made the 4 hour hike up to the spectacular Abbot Pass hut. We had the hut to ourselves and enjoyed hanging out at 10000ft between Mt. Victoria & Lefroy. We also spent a bit of time practicing with ropework & rock gear. In the morning we awoke to stars, but by the time we were heading out the door it was pouring rain. They were still keen so we started out anyways and climbed along the ridge of Victoria in very challenging conditions. The rain & snow never let up so we decided to forgo the summit but dropped down onto the Huber glacier which involved an exciting rappel over a bergshrund (Suzie's 3rd rappel ever!). The descent down the Huber glacier & ledges was a good way to end the trip.

The following day we went to Back of the Lake where we did a bunch of fun rock climbs. Pat managed to do his first gear lead as well!

Rock climbing in Lake Louise.

  1. Hey Jay,

cool to see the little report here. I've seen the hut book entry at Abbot Pass, dated 4 days before I was there (coming from Lake Louise over the traverse).
Picture looks like you guys had a lot of fun with the weather ;-)

    Cheers,
    Carsten
